WSC Volleyball Downs U Of Mary In Three Sets

WAYNE - Wayne State volleyball improved to 13-3 overall on the season and 6-1 in the NSIC with Saturday’s 3-0 homecoming sweep of the University of Mary. Scores of the match favored the ‘Cats 25-15, 25-16 and 25-10. With the loss the Marauders fall to 2-12 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
The Wildcats used a balanced offensive attack as no player recorded double-digits in kills. Wayne State held the advantages in attack percentage .207-.056, assists 36-22 and service aces 14-2. University of Mary did out block WSC 5-2 and both teams recorded 53 digs.
Senior Melanie Placke led a balanced offense with nine kills on 14 attacks for a hitting percentage of .571. Lexi Malm and Lauren Sieckmann each notched seven kills for the ‘Cats, Cori Hobbs and Alex Armes tallied five kills while setter Leisa McClintock had three and Katie Hughes and Elizabeth Gebhardt each had one kill. McClintock led Wayne State in assists with 29 while Hobbs and Courtney VanGroningen each recorded double-digit digs with 12 and 11 respectively. U-Mary had Morgan Dake and Allison Adams tie for the team lead in kills with six apiece.
The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend facing a pair of top 10 nationally ranked teams, visiting #10 Minnesota State Friday night at 7 p.m. and #4 Concordia-St. Paul Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
