HASTINGS (KTCH/KCTY) - The dream scenario came true yesterday for Jalyn Zeiss and the Wayne High softball team. Trailing 8-7 to Milford with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and two runners aboard, Zeiss stepped to the plate and smacked an two-run triple to win the game 9-8 for the Blue Devils, advancing to the second round of the Class C State Tournament.
Wayne exploded for six runs in the second inning to lead 6-0, but over the course of the next four innings, the Eagle would come back and eventually take an 8-6 lead in the sixth. Wayne was able to plate a run in the sixth by way of an Emily Leeper RBI groundout to make it 8-7, before Zeiss had the hero’s at bat in the seventh. The Blue Devils, now 26-4 on the year, will play Arlington at 12:30 this afternoon. The game will be broadcast on 1590 KTCH and online at waynedailynews.com. Also winning in the first round at state was Guardian Angels Central Catholic out of West Point, defeating Fairbury 4-1. GACC will Wahoo at 12:30.
