WHS Softball Eliminated From State Tournament

HASTINGS (KTCH/KCTY) - The Wayne High Softball team was eliminated from the Class C State Tournament in Hastings yesterday. In the first game, Wayne faced off against Arlington. The Blue Devils took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth, when the Eagles erupted for seven runs.
Wayne was unable to score in the top of the seventh inning, giving Arlington the win 9-3. Falling into an elimination game and the loser’s bracket, the Blue Devils would next face the Fairbury Jeffs. It was a tight game, starting when Fairbury scored two runs in the bottom of the first to lead 2-0. The Blue Devils answered with three runs in the second inning and one in the third to lead 4-2. The Jeffs added a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Blue Devil lead to 4-3, before Wayne’s Sydnie Harris blasted a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth, extending their lead to 6-3. The Jeffs added a run in the bottom of the sixth, to make it 6-4 still in favor of Wayne. Fairbury would make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning, when they loaded the bases with just one out. The Jeffs were able to add two runs and tie the game 6-6, forcing extra innings. Wayne put runners aboard right away in the top of the eighth but was unable to score. Fairbury had a runner on second to start the bottom of the eighth, due to the tie-breaker rule. The Jeffs were able to score a run, giving Fairbury the win 7-6. Wayne ends their season at 26-6 overall.
