WSC Volleyball Ends Regular Season With Win Over Winona

WAYNE - The 16th-ranked Wayne State College volleyball team avenged a loss from earlier this season with a 3-1 victory over Winona State in Northern Sun Conference volleyball action on Saturday. Scores of the match were 19-25, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-23. The Wildcats improve to 22-8 overall and 14-6 in the NSIC with the victory while Winona State is now 20-10 and 12-18 in league play.
Winona State outhit Wayne State .190-.175 and had the advantage in kills 65-48 but the Wildcats forced the Warriors into 30 attack errors while WSC only had 18. Wayne State also held an advantage in blocks 11.0-7.0.
Individually, the Wildcats had three players record double-doubles in the win over Winona State. Junior Cori Hobbs led the team in both kills (15) and digs (24) for her double-double while Katie Hughes notched 12 kills and 17 digs. Leisa McClintock also reached double-digits in two categories as she dished out 36 assists to go along with her 11 digs. Senior Alex Armes anchored the ‘Cats defense at the net accounting for five of the team’s 11 blocks.
Winona State had three players in double-digit kills as Bekah Saugen led the team with 18 kills, Kate Horihan was second with 15 and Katie Froehle was third with 13 kills.
Wayne State finishes the regular season with a 22-8 overall record while going 14-6 in conference play and will face Northern State in the first round of the NSIC volleyball tournament Friday in St. Paul, MN.
