WAYNE - The 16th ranked Wayne State College women’s basketball team extended their home winning streak to 47 straight games on Tuesday night with a 83-46 season opening win over York College. The Wildcats are now 1-0 on the young season while York College falls to 1-6.
The Panthers hung around with the Wildcats at the beginning of the game as York took 6-5 lead five minutes into the game when Alyssa Becker made a layup to give York the advantage. Wayne State would respond though with a 15-0 run spurred on by Katie Hoskins off the bench who had seven of the 15 points. The Panthers’ scoring drought lasted almost eight minutes until Taylor Runyan broke the Wildcats run with a layup to make the score 20-8. The game then went back and forth for rest of the first half as Wayne State took a 35-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Sophomore guard Ashton Yossi came out of halftime looking to score and poured in eight of the team’s first 12 points in the second half to bolster the Wildcats advantage to 24 points with a 47-23 lead. Wayne State would build on that lead the rest of the second half as the WSC achieved their biggest lead of the night when Ellen Hansen drilled a three point with 16 seconds left to give Wayne State the 83-46 victory over the Panthers.
The Wildcats shot 42.0 percent (29-69), 28.6 percent (8-28) from behind the arc and 68.0 percent (17-25) from the charity stripe in the contest while holding the Panthers to 27.9 percent (17-61) from the field, 27.3 percent (3-11) and 90.0 percent (9-10) from the free throw line. WSC outrebounded YC 47-44 while holding advantages in assists 20-12, blocks 12-1 and 23-6 in steals. The Wildcats forced the Panthers into 27 turnovers while only committing 13 of their own.
Freshman Katie Hoskins led the team in scoring with 18 points while also recording four rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Sophomore Ashton Yossi chipped in 17 points while Ellen Hansen and Jordan Spencer each had double-doubles as Hansen poured in 11 points and grabbed 16 rebounds while Spencer netted 13 points and snared 14 rebounds.
