Wildcat Women Down St. Ambrose

WAYNE - The #10 Wayne State women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season and extended their home winning streak to 49 straight games with an 82-47 victory over St. Ambrose University on Sunday afternoon as the Wildcats used a big first half to take a commanding lead on the way to the win. Jordan Spencer led the team in scoring for a second straight game with 19 points and Shantel Lehmann recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds. WSC is now 3-0 overall while St. Ambrose falls to 5-3 on the season.
The Wildcats started the game with a bang as they jumped on the Queen Bees from the start and used a 41-3 run to start the game in the first 11 minutes and 12 seconds of the game. Wayne State used tenacious defense to hold St. Ambrose to four points through the first 12 minutes of the contest. WSC scored in all aspects of the game in the first half netting 20 points in the paint to two for St. Ambrose while also recording 10 points off of turnovers, seven second chance points and four fast break points. Wayne State also showcased their depth in the first half as the Wildcat bench outscored the Queen Bees bench 20-6. Two free throws by Shantel Lehmann at the 1:54 mark remaining in the first half gave Wayne State a 51-20 advantage that the ‘Cats would carry into the locker room.
Jordan Spencer got WSC going right away in the second half with a jumper just 17 seconds into the half to push the Wayne State lead to 33 with a 53-20 advantage. The Wildcats would slowly work on extending that lead and built to their biggest second half lead of 41 points when Katie Hoskins hit a layup to give WSC a 68-27 advantage with 9:19 remaining. The two teams would then play the rest of the contest back and forth as the Queen Bees never got closer than 32 the rest of the way.
Wayne State shot 49.2 percent (32-65) from the field in the contest while going 7-19 (36.8%) from the three point line and 11-16 (68.8%) from the charity stripe. St. Ambrose was held under 30 percent shooting in the game as they went 18-61 (29.5%) from the field, 5-9 (55.6%) from behind the arc and 6-10 (60.0%) from the free throw line. The Wildcats held advantages in rebounds (59-22), assists (18-10) and blocks (5-2) while the Queen Bees held the edge in turnovers (16-21) and steals (12-10).
The Wildcats were led in scoring by Jordan Spencer’s 19 points while three other players were also in double-digits as Katie Hoskins had 15, Ashton Yossi had 12 and Shantel Lehmann had 10 points. Lehmann notched her first double-double of the season with a game-high 15 rebounds to go with her 10 points. Kara Powell was also in double-digits in rebounds with 12 while Addy Roller led the Wildcats in assists with six. St. Ambrose had two players in double-figures as Devan Griffin had 12 points and Katie Jensen had 10.
Wayne State opens Northern Sun Conference play Saturday afternoon in Sioux Falls facing #12 Augustana College in a 4 p.m. contest at the Elmen Center.
