Augustana Women Hand WSC First Loss Of Season

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - #10 Augustana College handed #9 Wayne State College its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon 82-56 at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the Northern Sun Conference opener for both teams. The host Vikings are now 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play while Wayne State falls to 3-1 and 0-1 in the NSIC.
The game was close early as the two teams exchanged several ties and lead changes. A Whitney Epp jumper at the 16:11 mark gave WSC its last lead of the game at 10-9. WSC was within one at 17-16 following a Jordan Spencer lay in with 11:41 to play in the half, but the host Vikings reeled off the next 13 points over a span of just 3:09 and took a 30-16 lead before another Spencer layup stopped the Viking run at the 8:05 mark of the first half.
Augustana built a 16 point lead at 37-21 with 4:19 to go before halftime, but WSC closed the half strong and used an Ellen Hansen 3-pointer and a layup to close the half cutting the Viking lead to eight at intermission at 42-34.
The second half was all Augustana as the Vikings outscored WSC 40-22 and went on to the 82-56 win. WSC trailed 46-37 with 18:30 to play in the game, then the Vikings scored eight straight points to stop any chance of a Wildcat comeback to take a 54-37 lead and WSC never got closer than 15 points the rest of the game as the Vikings handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season.
Junior forward Ellen Hansen led Wayne State with 14 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Sophomore forward Jordan Spencer and freshman guard Addy Roller also reached double figures with 11 points apiece.
WSC made 21 of 55 shots in the game for 38.2 percent including 5 of 17 (29.4%) behind the three point line. The ‘Cats were 9 of 13 at the charity stripe (69.2%) in the contest.
Alex Feeney paced Augustana in scoring with 19 points to go with 11 rebounds. Faith Tinklenberg (17), Lydia Nelson (13) and Emily Schulte (11) also scored in double digits for the Vikings.
Augustana College shot 45.5 percent from the field making 30 of 66 shots. The Vikings were 8 of 17 (47.1%) from the three point line and 14 of 17 (82.4%) at the free throw stripe.
The host Vikings held a 44-30 advantage in rebounding over the Wildcats thanks to Feeney’s 11 caroms while Hansen hauled in 11 boards for WSC. The ‘Cats had 15 turnovers to 12 on Augustana. Addy Roller was credited with five assists to lead Wayne State while sophomore center Whitney Epp had six blocked shots in the contest.
Wayne State will be at home next weekend for a pair of Northern Sun Conference contests, hosting Sioux Falls Friday at 6 p.m. and Southwest Minnesota State Saturday at 4 p.m. at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.
