SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Wayne State could not overcome a 15-2 deficit to start the game as the Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season Saturday evening falling 72-66 at Augustana College in the Northern Sun Conference men’s basketball opener for both teams.  Augustana is now 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in the NSIC while the Wildcats drop to 5-1 and 0-1 in league play.
Augustana led from start to finish and got off to a hot start taking a 15-2 lead in the first 4:30 of the contest.  WSC still trailed by nine at 25-16 with 9:17 to play in the first half, but the Wildcats closed the gap to two at 27-25 on a Derrell Williams jumper with 5:08 remaining in the half.
With WSC still trailing 31-29, Augustana scored six straight points just before halftime to go in front 37-29 until Ayron Worthington’s layup with 1:08 left before halftime made the halftime score 37-31 in favor of the Vikings.
The second half saw Augustana hold off a pair of Wildcat runs as the Vikings maintained the lead in the contest.  The Vikings led 41-34 with 18:15 to play, but Wayne State’s Ty Bauschek drained a three pointer followed by a layup to pull the Wildcats within two at 41-39 with 15:38 left.  But Augustana then scored the next six points to push the advantage back to eight points.
WSC made one final run at the Vikings late in the game and got as close as four points at 68-64 with 41 seconds remaining on a Ben Galemmo trey, but Augustana made four straight free throws down the stretch to seal the 72-66 win.
Senior guard Amry Shelby led all scorers for Wayne State with 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting.  Ty Bauschek chipped in 13 points while Ayron Worthington and Derrell Williams also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Wildcats were 27 of 58 from the field for 46.6 percent that included 6 of 17 from the three point line.  WSC was just 6 of 7 at the free throw stripe in the contest.
Augustana’s top scorer was Cameron McCaffrey with 16 points followed by Brennan Olson with 11 and Zach Huisken 10.  The Vikings made 22 of 49 shots for 44.9 percent and were just 3 of 8 (37.5%) behind the three point line, but held a sizeable advantage at the free throw line making 25 of 32 (78.1%).
The Vikings held a 34-30 edge in rebounding over Wayne State as Olson hauled in seven boards for Augustana while Williams grabbed a game-high eight caroms to lead the Wildcats on the glass.
Junior guard LaTroy Wright handed out eight of Wayne State’s 14 assists in the game.  WSC had 16 turnovers compared to 12 by Augustana.
The Wildcats return to Rice Auditorium next weekend for Northern Sun Conference play hosting Sioux Falls Friday night at 8 p.m. and Southwest Minnesota State Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
