Posted: 21 December, 2012

LINCOLN (AP) - The Department of Economic Development has awarded more than $1.2 million for housing assistance programs aimed at low-income residents in northeast Nebraska. The money is going to four nonprofits that build and restore homes, with a focus on first-time homebuyers.  The Norfolk-based NeighborWorks Northeast Nebraska is receiving $500,000 to help 13 homebuyers. Another Norfolk group, Northeast Economic Development Inc., is receiving nearly $366,000 to acquire vacant lots and build four single-family homes.  NEHI, Inc., in Allen will receive $250,000 to buy and rehabilitate eight homes. In Tekamah, the Three Rivers Housing Development Corporation is receiving $150,000 to buy and rehabilitate five homes.  In several cases, the awards will also help provide down payment assistance.
