WSC Baseball Picked Fifth In NSIC Preseason Poll

WAYNE - The Wayne State College baseball team has been picked fifth in the 2013 NSIC Preseason Baseball Coaches Poll released Thursday by the league office in Burnsville, Minnesota. The Wildcats return five position starters and 10 pitchers from last year’s team that finished 32-18 overall and was 23-9 in the NSIC for a third place finish.  Senior starting pitcher Tadd Johansen and junior first baseman CJ Nolen were selected as Wildcat Players to Watch in the NSIC this season.
            Three-time defending NSIC regular season champion Minnesota State was selected by league coaches as the team to beat receiving 13 first-place votes and 195 points with St. Cloud State second with one first-place vote and 177 points.  Winona State was third with one first-place vote and 163 points while Augustana came in fourth with 158 points.  Wayne State was fifth with 152 points. 
            Minnesota Duluth was a distant sixth at 116 points followed by Bemidji State (112), Concordia-St. Paul (108), Southwest Minnesota State (95) and Upper Iowa (91) rounding out the top 10.  Northern State (63), Sioux Falls (59), University of Mary (38), Minot State (29) and Minnesota, Crookston (19) fill out the preseason coaches’ poll.
            Tadd Johansen was listed as Wayne State’s Pitcher to Watch in the league this season.  The senior left-hander from Elkhorn posted a 7-3 record last season in 11 starts with three complete games and one shutout with a 3.84 ERA.  He led the Wildcats last season in innings pitched (70.1) and wins (7) while tied for the team lead in complete game (3) and ranked second in strikeouts with 50.
            CJ Nolen was tabbed as the Wildcat Player to Watch in the NSIC this season.  The junior first baseman from Sioux City (Iowa) West High School is the top returning hitter for the Wildcats after batting .313 last season with three homers, six doubles and 28 RBI’s.  Nolen tied for second on the team in stolen bases last season with seven and had 10 multi-hit games.           
            Wayne State is scheduled to open the 2013 season on Friday, February 15th at the NSIC Metrodome Classic where the Wildcats face Minot State in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
