Wayne State Men Rally Late For Win Over Augustana

WAYNE - Junior guard LaTroy Wright sank two free throws followed by a steal that led to the game-winning basket in the final 11 seconds to rally Wayne State College in a 64-63 Northern Sun Conference men’s basketball win Tuesday evening over Augustana College at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats are now 11-5 overall and 5-5 in the NSIC while the Vikings slip to 10-4 and 6-4.
Each team had 7-0 runs early in the game and that was the biggest lead by either team. WSC started the game leading 7-0 thanks to three pointers by LaTroy Wright and Adol Aluong. Then Augustana answered with a 7-0 run and tied the score at 7-7. The Vikings took their biggest lead of the first half at 14-9, then the game turned into a back and forth battle that featured 11 ties and three lead changes in the first half alone with Augustana holding a 33-32 lead at halftime.
The second half was just as intense featuring nine lead changes and three ties with neither team leading by more than five points. WSC took a 37-35 lead early in the second half on a Ty Bauschek three pointer. The Viking then score the next six points to go up 41-37 on a Zach Huisken layup with 15:57 to play. The Wildcats went on a 9-2 run and took a 49-45 lead on a 3-pointer by Aluong with 12:01 remaining.
Augustana then responded and took a 54-51 lead on a Cameron McCaffrey jumper with 7:18 to play. The game’s 14th and final tie came at 56-56 with 4:17 to play followed by five straight points from Augustana as the Vikings took a 61-56 lead on two Alex Richter free throws with 2:10 to go.
A Derrell Williams free throw followed by a Bauschek 3-pointer with 50 seconds to play cut the Viking advantage to 61-60. The Vikings took a 63-60 lead on a Daniel Jansen lay in with 21 seconds to play. Wayne State’s LaTroy Wright then drove the length of the floor and was fouled, making both free throws with 13 seconds to play cutting the Viking lead to one again at 63-62.
With WSC applying back court pressure, the Wildcats tipped a pass by McCaffrey with Wright getting the steal leading a 2 on 1 fast break, passing the ball to Bauschek for a layup from the left side of the basket with 6.7 seconds remaining putting WSC ahead 64-63.
After each team took timeouts, Augustana played the ball in to McCaffrey who put up a running jumper in the lane that went off the rim and a tip by Jansen just rolled out of the cylinder as WSC escaped with the 64-63 win.
Wright finished with a game-high 21 points to lead Wayne State with 17 coming in the first half. Bauschek ended with 12 points followed by Aluong and Williams with 11 apiece.
WSC shot 51.1 percent from the field making 23 of 45 shots. It was the ninth game this season the ‘Cats shot over 50 percent. WSC was 8 for 17 behind the three point line and 10 for 16 at the charity stripe.
McCaffrey paced Augustana with 19 points followed by Alex Richter’s 14 points and Daniel Jansen 10. The Vikings were 23 of 53 shooting for 43.4 percent, going 4 of 17 behind the three point line and 13 for 18 at the foul stripe.
Augustana won the rebounding battle over Wayne State 35-25 thanks to nine boards from Joe Burt while Williams hauled in nine boards for WSC. The ‘Cats had 16 turnovers to 14 by Augustana.
The Wildcats will be at home again this weekend entertaining Minot State Friday night at 8 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. Saturday matchup vs. the University of Mary.
