WSC Softball Picked Sixth In NSIC Preseason Poll

WAYNE - The Wayne State College softball team has been picked sixth in the 2013 NSIC Preseason Softball Coaches Poll released Thursday by the league office in Burnsville, Minnesota.  The Wildcats return five position starters and two pitchers from last year’s team that finished 28-23 overall while tied for seventh in the NSIC with a 13-13 league mark. Sophomores Kaiti Williams and Sara Scheffert have been listed as Wildcat Players to Watch in the NSIC this season.

            Defending NSIC regular season and tournament champion Minnesota State was selected by league coaches as the team to beat receiving nine first-place votes and 213 points, edging second place Augustana with 212 points and four first-place votes.  Winona State was third at 192 points followed by Minnesota Duluth with 190 points and two first-place votes while fifth place Concordia-St. Paul received the remaining first-place vote and had 174 points.
            Wayne State came in sixth with 141 points followed by the University of Mary (123), Northern State (119), St. Cloud State (110) and Southwest Minnesota State (102) in the Top 10.  Upper Iowa was 11th at 99 points with Minot State (73), Sioux Falls (60), MSU Moorhead (51), Bemidji State (40) and Minnesota, Crookston (21) rounding out the coaches’ poll.
            Sophomore Sara Scheffert was listed as Wayne State’s Pitcher to Watch in the league this season.  The Lincoln Southeast graduate posted a 13-10 record last season with a 2.45 ERA, firing 15 complete games with five shutouts and one save.  She had a strong finish to the 2012 season, firing back-to-back shutouts against nationally ranked teams from Augustana and Winona State. 
            Sophomore first baseman Kaiti Williams was tabbed as the Wildcat Player to Watch in the NSIC this season.  The Papillion-LaVista South graduate was a Second Team All-NSIC selection for the Wildcats last season as a freshman after posting .360 average that included a team-best .382 average in conference play.  Williams had a team-high 14 doubles with five homers and 27 RBI’s and also led the team in multi-hit games with 18.          
            Wayne State is scheduled to open the 2013 season on Sunday, March 3rd at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.
