WAYNE (KTCH/KCTY) - Saint Mary’s Catholic School and Wayne Community Schools were on lockdown for about an hour Wednesday morning due to gunshots being fired inside the Wayne city limits. According to officials with the Wayne Police Department, shots were fired along East 7th Street in Wayne near Saint Mary’s shortly before 10:00. The shooter, identified as 36-year-old Michael Ellis of Wayne was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm inside city limits. It is reported that Ellis did not target the schools and neither school was in danger and no injuries or damages were reported. Ellis is currently being held pending formal charges.

The following is an announcement from Wayne Community Schools Superintendent Mark Lenihan received on Wednesday:

"At 10:15 AM this morning we received word that possible gun shots had been fired inside the city limits of Wayne.  As a safety precaution we put all buildings into a level one lockdown until we received information at approximately 11:15 AM from the Wayne Police Department that it was safe to return to a normal school day.  During the lockdown students were kept inside their classrooms with their teachers.  Your student’s safety is always our first priority.  Please contact your schoolwith any concerns or questions."
