WAYNE (KTCH/KCTY) – The below freezing temperature was a mild undertone in what turned out to be a pitcher’s duel as Wayne High and Thurston-Cuming County (Pender) battled in Class B baseball on Saturday at Hank Overin Memorial Field in Wayne.
Hits were at a premium for both teams, as Wayne’s Jake "The Snake" Lutt threw a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits, three walks and a hit batter, while striking out five en route to the 2-0 Blue Devil win. Thurston-Cuming County’s Jacob Sebade was no slouch on the mound either, surrendering the two runs on three hits and three walks, striking out two in a complete game effort as well. The Thunder saw three players earn hits, as Benny Oliver, Carsten Tietz and Caleb Hansen each singled. For Wayne, Brad Longe singled and scored in the second inning, Danny Melena had a base hit and Lutt singled while Brady Soden reached on an error and scored in the fifth by way of an RBI by Drew Carroll. A stout defensive effort highlighted the day for the Blue Devils, who were able to help Lutt work his way out of various situations with runners aboard, and also turned a pair of double plays. The 2-0 win moves Wayne to 3-7 on the year, while Thurston-Cuming County falls to 3-6.
