Wildcat Baseball Takes Twinbill Over Northern State

WAYNE - The Wayne State baseball team was able to pick up two more victories on the season with a sweep of Northern State in doubleheader action. The Wildcats took game one from the Wolves 9-1 and then posted a 4-2 victory in game two. WSC is now 22-10 on the season and 14-4 in the NSIC while Northern State falls to 13-17 and 6-10 in the league.
Wayne State jumped on the Wolves early in game one notching one run in the top of the first inning when Michael Herman drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring in Kevin Andersen. The Wildcats would then add two more runs in the top of the fourth innings to expand their lead to 3-0 when Andersen doubled down the left field line to bring in two runs. WSC would break the game open in the top of the fifth inning scoring four runs to take a 7-0 advantage. Curtis Bussard singled to left field to bring in two RBI’s while Tanner Lancaster and Andersen recorded one RBI each. Northern State would score one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 7-1 but Wayne State would add two more runs in the top of the sixth inning when Bussard again singled to drive in two runs to give the Wildcats a 9-1 lead. Matt Schulz came in to close out the game in relief of Tadd Johansen and preserved the 9-1 win.
Curtis Bussard and Kevin Andersen combined to have big games for Wayne State as they drove in seven of the team’s nine runs. Bussard went 2-4 from the plate with four RBI’s and scored two runs while Andersen was 3-4 in his at bats with three RBI’s and one run scored. Michael Herman and Tanner Lancaster each had one RBI in the contest.
Tadd Johansen improved on his perfect record for the season and is now 8-0 after going 6.0 innings striking out three batters and allowing three hits and one run. Matt Schulz finished the game on the mound for Wayne State and notched one strikeout in one inning of work. Kassidy Gaines suffered the loss for Northern State and falls to 2-3 on the year.
Game two was not as high scoring but the ‘Cats were able to pick up another victory. Wayne State once again took the first lead of the ballgame scoring one run in the top of the fourth inning when Brett Keim had an infield single to bring in Kevin Andersen. WSC would tack on another run in the top of the sixth inning when Keim again brought Andersen into score and gave Wayne State a 2-0 lead. The Wolves would cut into the deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cameron Lehner scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1 in favor of WSC. Each team would score one run in the eighth inning as Brandon Lalk recorded an RBI for Wayne State and Robbie Rocamora notched an RBI for NSU to make the score 3-2 heading into the ninth inning. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning whne Tanner Lancaster singled through the left side of the infield to score Curtis Bussard. Trevor Reeves closed the door on the Wolves and recorded the save to hold on for the 4-2 victory.
Brett Keim led Wayne State at the plate in RBI’s with two while Brandon Lalk and Tanner Lancaster each drove in one run. CJ Nolen had a team high two hits while Kevin Andersen, Keim, Lalk, Michael Herman and Lancaster had one hit a piece.
Tom Doran picked up the win for the ‘Cats going 6.0 innings to improve to 3-3 on the year. Trevor Reeves recorded his third save of the season throwing two innings of no hit ball for WSC. Sean Winslow was tagged with the loss for NSU and is now 2-3 on the season.
Wayne State and Northern State will play another doubleheader to conclude the four-game NSIC series on Sunday starting at 12 p.m. at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.
