Wayne State Baseball Falls In Doubleheader To Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Wayne State College baseball team dropped two games at Augustana College Friday evening in Northern Sun Conference play by scores of 10-3 and 11-1 in games played at Karras Park in Sioux Falls.  The host Vikings move to 34-16 overall and 19-7 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 26-16 and 18-10 in league play.
            The first game saw the host Vikings limit Wayne State just four hits as Augustana College prevailed 10-3.  Augustana scored four runs in the first inning.  Both teams scored a single run in the third inning with the Vikings putting the game out of reach with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth before WSC plated two insurance runs in the seventh to make the final score 10-3.
            WSC scored in the third inning on Curtis Bussard’s solo homer over the right field wall.  In the seventh inning, Cris Ely had a pinch-hit RBI single while Bussard drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly for the Wildcats.
            Bussard finished 1 for 3 with two RBI’s and a homer to lead the ‘Cats at the plate while Ely, Blake Brisson and Jake Bruner added singles.
            Senior Tom Doran (3-5) suffered the pitching loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and two walks.  Sophomore lefthander Matt Schulz worked the final 1 2/3 innings and was charged with three runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout.
            The second game saw Augustana take advantage of five Wildcat errors while the Wildcat bats were held to just four hits as the Vikings completed the sweep with an 11-1 win in eight innings.
            The score was tied after 2 ½ innings of play at 1-1 as Blake Brisson reached on a bunt single and scored on a CJ Nolen groundout to second.  But Augustana took the lead for good with two runs in the third for a 3-1 lead, then four in the fifth, single runs in the sixth and seventh and two more runs in the eighth to make the final score 11-1.
            Augustana pitching limited the Wildcats to just four singles in the second game as Curtis Bussard, Blake Brisson, Kevin Andersen and Brandon Lalk each recorded hits for the Wildcats.
            Senior lefthander Eric Schwieger (2-4) suffered the pitching loss, charged with seven runs (four earned) on six hits in 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and three walks.  Nick Ragan (2 1/3 innings) and Tyler Hohenstein (2/3 inning) worked the final three innings in relief for WSC.
            Wayne State and Augustana will conclude their four-game NSIC series with another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
