WSC Softball Wins Saturday Elimination Game In NSIC Tournament

ROCHESTER, MN - Vicki Nielsen hit a three-run homer while Sara Scheffert pitched a complete game to lead Wayne State in a 4-1 elimination win over St. Cloud State Saturday afternoon at the NSIC Softball Tournament at the Rochester Community and Technical College Dome in Rochester, Minnesota. The Wildcats improve to 28-15 on the season with the win while ending St. Cloud State’s season at 28-26.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Wayne State pushed three runs across the plate. Kylee Simpson led off the inning with an infield single. Kelcie Bormann was hit by a pitch and both players scored when Vicki Nielsen connected for a three-run homer over the right center field fence to give the ‘Cats a 3-0 lead.
St. Cloud State scored in the top of the sixth inning to trim the Wildcat advantage to 3-1, but WSC got the run back in the bottom of the sixth inning to close out the scoring as Megan Hagemann walked, moved to second on a Michelle Thille sacrifice bunt and scored when Jordan King reached on a throwing error by the Huskies to score Hagemann with the fourth and final Wildcat run.
The Huskies had six hits in the game to just four by the Wildcats. Nielsen’s three-run homer was the big hit for Wayne State while Simpson, Sam O’Brien and Hagemann each singled.
Sophomore pitcher Sara Scheffert improved to 17-7 on the season with the complete-game win. The Lincoln Southeast graduate allowed just one run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Wayne State will play another elimination game at the NSIC Softball Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota Saturday evening at 6 p.m. against either Augustana or Minnesota Duluth.
