Posted: 01 July, 2013

LINCOLN (KTCH/KCTY) - The Wayne Dirt Devils 18 and under softball team competed in the USSSA Class A state tournament at the Doris Blair Softball Complex in Lincoln Friday through Sunday, earning a second place finish. The Dirt Devils went 5-2 in the tournament, winning their first two games 2-0 over Team Nebraska Gold and 3-0 over Nebraska Sizzle-Stevens. Wayne then suffered its first loss, 2-1 to Nebraska Gold, dropping them into the loser’s bracket. The Dirt Devils battled their way through, winning 5-4 over the Omaha Quakes White, followed by a 4-1 win over Elite Gold and a 1-0 win over the Nebraska Blue Diamonds. Wayne was then paired once again with Nebraska Gold in the tournament finals, needing to win twice in order to claim the championship. It was not meant to be, however, as Nebraska Gold won 11-0, giving Wayne the silver medal. The Dirt Devils host the Norfolk Golden Girls in a doubleheader Tuesday night, before traveling to Sioux Falls for the Ringneck Tournament Friday-Sunday.
