WAYNE (KTCH/KCTY) - The Wayne Dirt Devil 18 and under softball team hosted the Norfolk Golden Girls in a doubleheader last night in their final home contests of the regular season.
The first game was a pitcher’s duel between Wayne’s Cassy Miller and Norfolk’s Jayd Roberts. The Dirt Devils were able to score a run in the first inning, and led 1-0 until the top of the fifth inning when Norfolk tied the game. With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning Megan Hoffart layed down a near perfect bunt that scored Miller from third base, giving Wayne the 2-1 lead. That would go on to be the final score, as Miller retired the side in the top of the seventh. Along with the one run, Miller allowed just two hits while striking out nine.
In the nightcap, Norfolk jumped out early 2-0 in the top of the first. That was tied in the bottom half of the inning when Cailtin Fehringer smashed a two-run homerun two left-center field. The Golden Girls quickly responded however, adding two runs in the second inning, followed by three in the seventh. Wayne plated a run in the fourth and one in the seventh, and the Dirt Devils would fall 7-4. Fehringer had two hits including the homerun and a pair of RBIs, while Kendall Gamble had an RBI hit. Miller, Victoria Kranz, Emily Leeper and Sydney Harris each had hits. Kristin Carroll took the loss pitching, surrendering the seven runs on nine hits and three walks, striking out two.
