WSC Soccer Bested By Washburn

WAYNE - The Wayne State College women’s soccer team lost to Washburn in the home opener for the Wildcats as WU defeated WSC 5-0 on Sunday at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne, Nebraska.
The Ichabods got off to a quick start scoring 10 minutes into the contest when Whitney Skinner scored her first goal of the season to put Washburn up 1-0. WU would build on that lead later in the first half when Olivia Stovall also scored her first goal of the season at the 33:34 mark to give the Ichabods a 2-0 lead that they would take into the half. Devon Schmitz quickly built on the lead after halftime when she scored three minutes into the second half. Kate Combs and Kelly Schunk added one goal apiece in the second half to give Washburn the 5-0 victory over Wayne State.
Washburn held a 25-13 advantage in shots and 13-7 edge in shots on goal over the Wildcats. WSC did have five corner kick to only three by the Ichabods.
Senior forward Macy Hagen led the Wildcats in shots with three while Natalie Poppe had two. Mallory Hoyt, Josei Brown, Kelly Voigt, Jordan Hobza, Heather Gunderson, Kelsea Lambert, Norma Volkmer and McKenna Adams each had one shot for WSC. Freshman goalkeeper Kylie Comba notched eight saves in the contest while falling to 0-2 on the season as Tori Fuglister picked up the win for Washburn in the net and is now 1-1 on the year.
Wayne State will be on the road on Friday afternoon at Missouri Western in a 4 p.m. contest that will be played in St. Joseph, Missouri.
