#15 WSC Volleyball Surprised By Winona

WINONA, MN - Winona State handed #15 Wayne State College a 20-25, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-18 Northern Sun Conference volleyball loss Saturday evening at McCown Gymnasium in Winona, Minnesota. The loss drops the Wildcats to 15-6 overall and 6-5 in league play while Winona State improves to 7-13 and 4-7 in the NSIC.
Wayne State won the opening set 25-20 hitting .325 with 16 kills and just three attack errors. The second set saw Winona State build an early 13-7 lead, then hold off a late WSC rally, to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 set win.
The turning point in the match came in the third set as WSC built a 21-17 lead, only to watch the host Warriors score seven straight points to gain control of the set, winning 25-23. In the fourth set, Wayne State held an early 9-6 lead. But with the score tied at 13-13, Winona State scored seven of the next nine points to go in front 20-15 and the Warriors finished off the Wildcats with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
Winona State outhit Wayne State .179-.153 with the Warriors holding a 58-47 advantage in kills. Winona State also had 96 digs to 88 for WSC while the Warriors had 12 blocks to Wayne State’s nine.
Senior middle hitter Lexi Malm recorded a career-high 13 kills to lead Wayne State in the match. Cori Hobbs, Alyssa Frauendorfer and Elizabeth Gebhardt each contributed 10 kills to the Wildcat attack. Courtney VanGroningen, Hobbs and Michaela Mestl had 21 digs apiece with Tatum Wroblewski adding 14 and setter Leisa McClintock handed out 45 set assists.
The Wildcats return to play on Tuesday evening visiting Augustana College in a 7 p.m. Northern Sun Conference contest.
