Blue Devils Drop Playoff Heartbreaker To Falls City

FALLS CITY (KTCH/KCTY) – The Wayne High football team was seeking its first playoff win since 1983, travelling to Falls City for the first round of the Class C1 tournament. Additionally, the Falls City Tigers were looking for their first playoff win ever.
The Blue Devils led by a score of 14-12 at halftime, before the Tigers took a 20-14 lead into the fourth quarter. Midway through the fourth, Wayne’s Jalen Barry hit Jared Anderson for a 20-yard touchdown pass. That was followed up shortly by a seven-yard pass from Barry to Luke Rethwisch, giving Wayne a 27-20 lead. The Barry to Rethwisch score was set up by a blocked punt.
The Tigers wouldn’t go away just yet, however, as quarterback Mitch Harling connected with Jordan Stoller for a touchdown, which was followed by a completed two point conversion, giving Falls City a 28-27 lead. With just 1:33 left in the game. Wayne would get the ball for one last chance, but Falls City intercepted a pass, marking the coup de grace and the win for the Tigers.
Anderson had seven catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns for Wayne in the ballgame. The Blue Devils end their season at 5-5 overall, marking the most wins for a Wayne team since the 2005-2006 season.
