Wayne Girls Advance In C2-4 Subdistrict

Posted: 19 February, 2014

OAKLAND (KTCH/KCTY) - Girls’ high school basketball subdistricts continued Tuesday night in Nebraska. In the C1-7 Subdistrict held in Oakland, #1 seed Wayne faced off against the #4 seed West Point-Beemer. Both teams struggled with turnovers, and points were at a premium as Wayne held just an 18-17 advantage at halftime. The Lady Blue Devils were able to outscore West Point-Beemer 8-4 in the third quarter to lead 26-21 heading into the fourth. However, Wayne was held scoreless in the fourth quarter until 1:23 left to go. The Lady Blue Devils hit a few free throws to go up 29-25. Then West Point-Beemer’s Amanda Hansen hit a three pointer with five seconds left and was fouled, giving her the opportunity to tie the game with a free throw. She missed the shot, and Wayne’s Ashton Schweers was fouled rebounding with three seconds to go. Schweers made two free throws to ice the game, and give Wayne a 31-28 win. Jalyn Zeiss and Meagan Backer each had seven points for Wayne, while Schweers had six. The Lady Blue Devils move to 15-10 on the season, and will face Tekamah-Herman in the subdistrict finals on Thursday at 7:00.
