WAYNE - Wayne State junior thrower Sara Wells was named the Northern Sun Conference Indoor Women’s Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday morning by the league office in Burnsville, Minnesota following her performance at last Friday’s South Dakota Twilight Meet. It’s the second time this season that Wells has received the honor.
Wells, a graduate of Boone Central High School, set a new school record and hit an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the shot put at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion with a mark of 50’ 2 ½”. She topped her previous school record by one foot, 4 ½ inches and is the first athlete at WSC to break the 50 foot barrier indoors in the shot put. Wells currently leads the NSIC in shot put by over a foot and a half and ranks fifth in NCAA Division II in the event.
Wayne State College will compete at the NSIC Indoor Championships in Bemidji, Minnesota on Friday and Saturday.
