NORFOLK (KTCH/KCTY) – Two longtime area rivals faced off for the C1-4 girls’ district championship Friday night, as Wayne met Pierce at Northeast Community College in Norfolk.
Pierce led just 12-10 after the first quarter, but a second quarter that saw Wayne score just one point put the Lady Blue Devils in a 26-11 deficit at halftime. Wayne responded for 12 points in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth quarter, but in the end Pierce came out on top, winning 58-39. Five seniors played their last game in a Wayne uniform, as Jalyn Zeiss, Victoria Kranz, Ashton Schweers, Meagan Backer and Angie Nelson ended their careers on the court together. Zeiss was the leading scorer for Wayne with 12 points, while Kranz had seven, Schweers and Nelson each added six and Backer had three points. Wayne ends their season at 16-11 overall, and as the 2013/2014 C1-4 District Runner-Up. Congratulations to the Lady Blue Devils on a fine season!
