WAYNE STATE INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS SET FOUR NEW SCHOOL RECORDS AT NEBRASKA , SOUTH DAKOTA MEETS

The Wayne State College indoor track and field teams competed at two separate meets this weekend as part of the team participated in the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln Friday night and Saturday while a majority of the team compete Saturday at the John Dalton Open at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in the Dakota Dome. The Wildcats ended up with four new school records at the two meets with two national provisional qualifying marks. Senior sprinter Christina King broke the school record in the 400 meter dash for the third time this season at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, running 55.81 seconds to top her previous school mark of 57.50 set at last weekend’s Minnesota State Open in Mankato . It also improves her national provisional qualifying mark which unofficially ranks as the top time in NCAA Division II. Junior Paige Pollard also set a new school record at the Sevigne Invitational by placing fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.07, eclipsing her own school mark of 2:16.51 set last season. Her time is also a provisional national qualifying mark.

At the USD John Dalton Open in Vermillion, freshman Savannah Wakeley scored her third straight win in the high jump clearing 5’ 3”. Other top five finishers for the Wildcats in Vermillion were Brianne Hofstetter taking third in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump and Megan Dias placed fourth in both the long jump and triple jump.

For the Wayne State men, sophomore Andy Jansen set a new school record in the 400 meter dash at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Friday night with a clocking of 49.78 seconds, breaking the previous school record of 50.34 seconds set by Travis Fredrickson in 1996. He set a another new school record in the 600 yard run placing 12th overall in a time of 1:14.75 to better the previous school mark of 1:16.22 set by Korey Kriz in the 2004 season.

At the USD John Dalton Open, Cody Diehl scored the lone win for the Wildcats winning the pole vault clearing 15’ 6”. John Kern placed second in the one mile run, Alex Timperly finished third in the triple jump with Lucas Sirek taking fourth. Michael King was fourth in the 60 meter dash and Brad Wright captured fifth in the weight throw to highlight top five finishers for the Wildcats.

Wayne State will compete next weekend in the Wildcat Open held at the Wayne State Recreation Center on Saturday with field events starting at 10:30 a.m. and running events at 12:30 p.m.
