WSC indoor track teams host Wildcat Open, set two new school records with one provisional mark

Wayne, Neb.--- The Wayne State College indoor track and field teams hosted the Wildcat Open on Saturday at the WSC Recreation Center. Other teams competing included Iowa Western Community College, Mount Marty, Nebraska-Omaha women, South Dakota School of Mines and University of Sioux Falls. The WSC women’s team scored seven wins with one school record while the men’s team had six first place finishes with one new school record and one NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
For the WSC women’s team, Casey Buskirk won two events, taking first in the weight throw (56’ 6”) and the shot put (42’ 11”). Junior jumper Megan Dias won the triple jump with a new school record mark of 37’ 6 ½”, breaking the previous school record of 37’ 4” set by Deanna Gollobit in 1999. Other winners included Christina King in the 600 meter run (1:39.43), Ky’Lee Engelken in the 1000 meter run (3:15.91), Megan Zavorka in the one mile run (5:16.77) and Savannah Wakeley in the high jump (5’ 1 Ύ”).
The top highlight for the Wildcat men’s team was sophomore Cody Diehl winning the pole vault with a mark of 15’ 9”, good enough for an NCAA provisional national qualifying mark. Brad Wright won the weight throw (55’ 11 Ύ”), Andy Jansen took first in the 800 meter run (2:01.26) and Cheto Cerda won the 1000 meter run in a time of 2:37.62. The other wins were by relay teams as the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Kenneth Moore, Mickey Doerr, Joe Chebul and Jason Schaaf took first in a time of 3:48.17 while the 4 x one mile relay team of Cheto Cerda, Lee Anderson, John Kern and Nate Preston set a new school record with a time of 18:22.32, topping the previous mark of 18:51.4 set by Mark Merritt, Donnty Thongby, Chris Garvin and James McGown in 1995.
Wayne State will compete next weekend in the Nebraska Tuneup Open in Lincoln on Friday, February 19.
