Wayne State College Rugby To Host Annual Tournament, March 27-28

Posted: 08 March, 2010

Teams from 17 states and Canada will compete in women's and men's divisions in rugby football March 27-28 in Wayne. The 72-team tournament at the "House of Pain" will feature "no helmets, no pads and no mercy," according to tournament director and WSC Rugby coach Darrin Barner.

WSC Rugby is a non-varsity club sport affiliated with the college's Student Activities Board. This is one of the largest rugby tournaments in the U.S., serving as a kick-off event for the 2010 spring rugby season for many college and city teams.  For the seventh time in nine years, last year's National Champion of USA rugby will be in Wayne to take on all challengers to play the nation's number one ranked team.

Competing teams include: Wayne State, University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, University of Nebraska, University of Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Kansas City, Chadron State, Storm Lake, and other teams from across the U.S.

Games will be played from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 27, and semifinals and championship games will be played from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at the Wayne Rugby Park on East 4th Street, or just south of the Pamida discount store on Highway 35 (7th Street). A tournament bracket and time schedule will be sent out Thursday, March 25.
