
Ag Conservation Funds Available...WSC To Provide Med Lock Box's At County Fair...Nebraska Out Of The Running For Federal Education Dollars

LINCOLN(AP)-- Nebraska agriculture producers are eligible to receive assistance to renovate shelterbelts, restore
forested riparian buffers, increase irrigation efficiency and improve habitat for grassland species. Funds are being provided through the Cooperative Conservation Partnership Initiative. Four CCPI proposals were approved for Nebraska. Deadline for producers who wish to be considered for funding is Aug. 11. Sign-ups are taking place at local Natural Resources Conservation Service offices. The U.S. Agriculture Department will provide more than $800,000 in financial assistance in fiscal year 2010 through CCPI.
WSC TO PROVIDE MED LOCK BOX'S
Wayne State College will be handing out free Medicine Lock Boxes at their booth at the Wayne County Fair. The coolege is trying to raise awareness about young people taking unneeded prescription drugs. Acording to a news release from the college. the Center for Disease Control found that in 2009 one out of five high school students in the United States have taken prescription drugs such as Oxycontin, percocet, Vicoden, Adderall, Ritalin or Xanax without a doctor's prescription. The Lock box's will be available at the college's booth in the Commercial Building.

LINCOLN(AP)-- Nebraska education officials are disappointed but not surprised the state has been eliminated from
competition for federal Race to the Top grants. Education Commissioner Roger Breed said the state's history of not providing extra support to low-performing schools and leaving control mostly to local officials likely hurt Nebraska.
