Funeral services for John Melena age 74 of Wayne will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial. He passed away Sunday at a Sioux City Hospital.
Visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. with family present.
A Vigil Service will be held at Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Interment: In Greenwood Cemetery Wayne with Military Rites
Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church Wayne, Providence Medical Center, Nebraska Knights of Columbus Foundation.

John Francis Melena was born August 17, 1937, at West Point to Frank L. and Eileen K. (Foy) Melena. He graduated from Howells High School in 1955, and Norfolk Junior College in 1957. He served in the United States Army Reserves from 1957 to 1962. John married Margaret Finegan July 8, 1961, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. John worked for Western Electric in Omaha before becoming a Telephone Man for Northwestern Bell/ U.S. West. After retiring, John worked part time for BTS and Hasemann Funeral Homes. John served as Co-Chairman of the Wayne Housing Authority, was a past State Deputy for the Nebraska Knights of Columbus, Knights of Columbus Council 8579 Grand Knight, and a member of the Wayne Baseball Association.
John is survived by his wife, Margaret; their children, Terri (Don) Hypse of Wayne, John Jr. (Steph) Melena of Milford, Pat (Julie) Melena of Wayne, Bill Melena of Wayne, and Molly (Casey) Schroeder of Wayne; four grandchildren, Amy Hypse of Columbus, Dan and Courtney Melena and Hailey Schroeder of Wayne; three sisters, Joan (Jack) Pfeifer of Elkhorn, Margaret (John) Cioni of Springfield, MO, Pat (Larry) Langhorst of Liberty, MO; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
John’s family appreciates your thoughts and kindness and invites you to lunch in the St. Mary’s Holy Family Hall following the committal service.
